Starting Point

September 27, 2011

As the initial starting point for my project, I have decided to use a poem for inspiration.

‘Love after Love’ by Derek Walcott

The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,

and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

It is a poem about happiness; having found oneself and being truly content. There are many different ways to interpret this happiness, why it has occured, etc, but personally I feel it’s about someone realising their self-worth and ability to make themselves feel happy.

Although this is my starting point, there are many different ideas I would like to explore and contextual references I’d like to see influence my plans. The imagery in this poem is fantastic though, for example the idea of feasting on your own life, and greeting yourself with elation.
